A Year of Listening

As this year comes to a close, we’ve been reflecting on our work.

Across conversations with coaches, athletic directors, and athletes, we saw leaders facing challenges. And it’s easy to experience them in isolation. But the truth is, leaders everywhere are facing similar issues. They just don’t talk to each other enough to know they’re not alone.

Different sports.
Different levels.
Same underlying tensions.

To end the BETTER Letter’s year, instead of telling stories or introducing frameworks, we wanted to name the ideas that shaped our year. These are the truths we kept returning to as we worked with teams and leaders navigating real pressure, real people, and real stakes.

Here are the ten that mattered most.

The 10 Ideas That Shaped Our Year

  1. Leadership always comes first.
Culture doesn’t simply drift into existence. It follows the leader’s habits, tone, and consistency.

  2. Culture is built by what you emphasize (or don’t).
Actions and behaviors teach faster than words. What gets addressed (or doesn’t) becomes the standard.

  3. Motivation isn’t what you say, it’s who you are.
Your players’ and staff’s belief in your leadership motivates more than any messaging, slogan, or speech.

  4. Retention is the real competitive advantage.
Even in the most transactional era of sports, continuity compounds. Healthy culture keeps people.

  5. Most leaders don’t need more input.
They need more intentional practice with the things they’re already trying to do: specific, focused, and reflective.

  6. Your pace becomes your team’s pace.
Calm is contagious. So is chaos. Leaders set the rhythm either intentionally or accidentally.

  7. Clarity beats intensity.
Players and staff don’t need louder leaders. They need clearer ones.

  8. Small wins sustain energy.
Progress fuels motivation more reliably than pressure, wins, or outcomes.

  9. Identity outlasts strategy.
Leaders who know who they are don’t chase every trend or comparison.

  10. The hardest work is inner work.
And it’s the work that quietly determines everything else.

🏁 Closing Reflection:

None of these ideas are flashy.
None promise shortcuts.
None are easy.

But they kept showing up. They address the real work of leadership.

As we head into a new year, these ideas will continue to guide how we think, teach, and serve. These ideas aren’t new, but they’ve always been true.
