🌟 The Idea: The Power of Thought and How to Train it.
Everything rises and falls in the way you think.
“Mindset” has become a buzzword, but its significance can’t be overstated. The way you think drives your actions, shapes your leadership, and defines the culture of your team or organization.
This week, we’re exploring some of our favorite thoughts, quotes, research, and practices about mindset—designed to challenge how you think and inspire you to grow.
💭 Tiny Thoughts on Mindset:
What is mindset? It’s the collection of thoughts you use to direct your focus and attention to the right things.
"You’re in charge of your mind. You can help it grow by using it in the right way." — Carol Dweck
“Success comes down to doing the obvious thing for an extraordinary period without convincing yourself that you’re smarter than you are.” — Shane Parrish
Your thinking impacts everything you do, primarily your leadership.
So, what are you doing to impact and direct your thinking toward the outcomes you're searching for each day?
🔬 Research Insight: The Brain’s Plasticity
Carol Dweck’s groundbreaking work on mindset revealed that our brains are far more adaptable than we once believed. People with a growth mindset—those who believe abilities can be developed through effort—achieve higher levels of success and are more resilient in the face of setbacks.
Even believing that your brain has plasticity (can change) puts you ahead of most.
We’ve seen this more strongly than ever in our work with PGA Tour Golfers. They are quick to tell us what they can and can’t do on a golf course. Most of it is founded on partial information based on their feelings.
We’ve even caught some of them lying to themselves. They believe something about their game that, when you examine their stats, is just completely false.
How you think about your brain and its ability to learn and grow is a competitive advantage.
⚙️ Practice: The Power of Positive Repetition
Your thoughts are like muscles—the more you train them, the stronger they become. Said differently, the way that you train your mind is with action. So, what are some things you can do to train your thoughts?
We want to practice self-awareness by training our brains to see challenges as growth opportunities.
Daily Affirmations:
Start each day, practice, or game with a simple affirmation or mantra. For example: “I am prepared to face today’s challenges and grow from them.”Celebrate and Track Progress:
Journal one win and lesson from the day to reinforce progress.Lead By Example:
Remember, your team’s mindset is a reflection of yours. If you want to build a culture of resilience, growth, and positivity, it starts with you.Reward Effort:
Reward and celebrate effort, not just results, to reinforce the value of growthFocus on One Area:
Focus on one area where a mindset shift could unlock potential for you or your team.
🪞 Conclusion: The Mindset Multiplier
Your mindset doesn’t just shape your actions—it shapes your team, culture, and outcomes. By investing in the way you think, you’re investing in everyone you lead. This week, challenge yourself to reframe one limiting belief and model the growth mindset for those around you. Small shifts in thought lead to significant changes in leadership.
BETTER’s Solution to Coach Development
As a part of our work, we lead cohorts of leaders. It’s just one meeting a month with a topic, some homework, and sharing about how it’s going. But it’s powerful. Many of the coaches and leaders in our cohort express the following sentiment:
“I wish every coach got to experience this on some level.”
So, we thought, why can’t they?
As a part of what’s next for BETTER.
We are launching a community around the Culture Playbook.
Until now, the Culture Playbook has been something you buy and then get. We wanted it to be so good and affordable that every coach in the country could access it.
From now on, leaders will receive the Culture Playbook as part of a guided community led by Kevin and Seth.
If you’ve enjoyed our newsletter, imagine a community where we will take you and others through a deeper level of how to install the systems for yourself, athletes, or other coaches. You can ask us questions directly. We can guide and share discussions, share ideas, and get feedback.
We will host monthly calls, and every coach will have direct access to us. We will lead guided discussions and encourage coaches and ADs to share best practices. We want it to become the absolute best resource for all things Culture Development, both at the program and department levels. Over time, we will continue to add content, resources, and offerings. You’ll get discounts on future products that the public won’t get. And no, the price is not changing.
We’re targeting a public launch in early January, offering newsletter readers early access and a 25% discount. Fill out the form using the link below, and we’ll send you a link to get started.
